Science often explains human behaviour as resulting from rational decision making. But in recent years a paradigm shift has occurred, with increasing evidence for the influence of emotional factors on judgement and behaviour-not only in the world of science but also in politics and economics. The National Centre of Competence in Research (NCCR) "AFFECTIVE SCIENCES: EMOTIONS IN INDIVIDUAL BEHAVIOUR AND SOCIAL PROCESSES” is one of the first interdisciplinary research networks worldwide to study emotions in a comprehensive manner. Research on the psychobiological and sociocultural mechanisms of emotion will help to improve physical and psychological health, to foster well-being in the workplace and the family, and to develop competences for the regulation and management of emotions.
NCCR members represent the fields of anthropology, history, neurology, philosophy, psychology, law, religion and economics at five different Swiss universities. In 11 individual projects they will conduct research into how emotions are produced and perceived, how they are controlled, and what social functions they serve; jointly developing and applying advanced methods and instruments. Researchers will synthesize their findings along three major axes cutting across all projects: Pro and anti-social behaviour (violence), gender differences, and emotional development throughout the life span. In collaboration with private and public partner institutions in politics, business, and health, the NCCR will emphasize the applications of research results. In addition, a graduate school and a postdoctoral program will train the next generation of interdisciplinary researchers.

Special emphasis is placed on the use of research findings to address social problems. Two major threads run through the entire project – health and violence. 1) The complex relations between health, well-being, and emotion are addressed by the study of issues such as early detection of biological determinants of mood and resilience, personal and situational factors leading to stress and burnout in the workplace, and cognitive biases as risk factors for depression and suicide. 2) Politically sensitive issues such as violence in the schools, criminal aggression, or violent conflicts between groups are addressed though the study of issues such as neuropsychological dispositions for rule breaking and criminal behaviour, lack of empathy with the victim, inability to control one's emotions to cope with stress, and inappropriate affect management in family interactions. With the following public institutions and companies a close collaboration has already been agreed upon: International Labour Organisation, Federal State Secretariat of Economic Affairs (SECO), Fribourg Department of Health and Social Affairs, Swiss Household Panel, and the companies Firmenich [Parfum / Geschmacksstoffhersteller], and Novartis. To optimize the potential for application, transfer partners are to be involved in research planning and execution from the very beginning of the project.
"Neuropsychologische Disposition für Regelbruch und kriminelles Verhalten"? Einerseits nicht gerade originell und neu als Ansatz, andererseits erinnert mich als Laie die Tonlage sehr an Steven Spielbergs Film "Minority Report": (Plot Outline: In the future, criminals are caught before the crimes they commit,...).
